Nettie and Aidan enjoy the limelight

Wednesday 07 December 2016

AIDAN MATTHEWS of Applegrove Primary School got the star treatment on finals day at the Scottish Open Grand Prix.

The 10-year-old was the winner of BADMINTONscotland's Design A Mascot competition open to schoolchildren throughout Scotland to create a design for the official mascot of the TOTAL BWF World Championships.

BADMINTONscotland wanted to appoint a new mascot for the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 to be held in Glasgow's Emirates Arena from August 21-27 and they were besieged with entries with just under 2,500 suggested designs from all over the country.

From the three that made the shortlist Aidan's Nettie was declared the winner.

While Nettie was introduced to the fans in the Emirates Arena as she joined Cyril the Squirrel and ShuttleJock on mascot duty, Aidan was accompanied into the Arena by Scotland's Commonwealth and European silver medallist Kirsty Gilmour, who presented the youngster with one of her Team GB Olympic shirts.

Meanwhile Nettie got cracking with her duties as the official BADMINTONscotland Mascot for the  World Championships, much to the delight of the packed finals day crowd. You will see Nettie, Shuittle Jock and Cyril the Squirrel out and about during the countdown to the Worlds, starting with the Yonex Scottish National Championships from February 3-5 in Perth.
