WITH just 17 months to go before the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 come to Glasgow, BADMINTONscotland is urging primary school children across the country to enter a competition to design a new mascot for the event.
The World Championships will be staged at the Emirates Arena from August 21-27 in 2017 and BADMINTONscotland would like primary school pupils throughout Scotland to try their hand at designing an imaginary and original character. It can be a person, an animal, a cartoon figure or an everyday object brought to life.
The mascot must be hand drawn and accompanied by a brief story about the character.
Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: “We have a great tradition of using mascots at our major events and we are looking for something special for the World Championships.
“We want to inspire the children to think differently and creatively. We want them to let their imaginations run wild and come up with a character who can help us promote the sport of badminton in the countdown to and during the World Championships.
“The new mascot will be Scotland’s cheerleader during the week-long event at the Emirates Arena and will help raise the profile of our sport in the months before the Championships come to Glasgow.”
Entries close on June 30 and a BADMINTONscotland panel will choose the best three designs before there is a public vote to decide the winner.
The new mascot will then be used at events and tournaments in the build-up to the World Championships, starting with the Scottish Open Grand Prix from November 23-27 when the new mascot will be unveiled.
BADMINTONscotland are offering to run a Development Festival at the school of the winning designer, as well as a school visit from the mascot, and tickets for the pupil’s class to attend the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017.
The designers of the best three entries will be announced in August and they and their class-mates will attend the Scottish Open Grand Prix for the unveiling of the new mascot. The classes will also receive tickets for the World Championships.
