Lee Chong Wei is ready for the Worlds!

Monday 20 March 2017

Lee Chong Wei’s legion of fans got the best possible news when the Malaysian superstar declared that his fourth Yonex All England title triumph had “got him movitated” for the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 in Glasgow from August 21-27.

Chong Wei will head for Glasgow determined to win his first World title – and the impressive way the three-time Olympic silver medallist marched to his latest All England crown will convince his fans that he can finally claim the big one that has continued to elude him throughout his glittering career.

He dominated the final against China’s unseeded Shi Yuqi, never allowing his young opponent to dictate in the way he did in beating Lin Dan in the semi-finals.

Instead, Chong Wei was in devastating form as he eased to his fifth win of the week on the way to the title. He said: “I am happy. I didn’t think I’d win the match so easily. Yesterday I watched Shi play Lin Dan, he played very, very well.”

“In the final I just focused on my game. I did not think too much, I just relaxed my mind, I think that helped me play better. I just enjoyed it.”

Shi Yuqi explained what it was like to face him when he said: “I’m here to learn from Lee Chong Wei. I think he’s better than me in both skills and tactics and I think he can always think ahead of me.”

The only time Chong Wei was taken to three games in Birmingham was in the semi-finals when he dropped the opener to Chou Tien Chen before hitting back to win 10-21 21-14 21-9 in his longest contest at 59 minutes.

But he was a man in a hurry in the final, taking just 45 minutes to be crowned champion again.

Chong Wei, who will be 35 in October, said: “This win has given me the motivation and focus for the World Championships.

“I will try my very best, I believe I can win it. I hope and believe that I can win the World Championships in Glasgow this year.”

Of the All England he added: “I will definitely come back next year, because the All England is my favourite tournament, I will 100 per cent come back next year. I will also see you in Glasgow.

Chong Wei had knee problems earlier in the year but added: “The last 10 days before this tournament I just decided that I wanted to come because it’s my favourite tournament. I am a little surprised I won the whole tournament actually.

“Because this is my first tournament of the year having come back from injury it means even more to me.”

And it means his confidence will be sky high as he bids to deny China’s Olympic champion Chen Long a hat-trick of World titles in a Glasgow line-up which will also include five-times World and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan and Denmark’s two big danger men Jan O Jorgensen and Viktor Axelsen.
