The TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships is the most prestigious tournament in the sport, rivalled only by the Olympic Games. Indeed the World Championships attracts a stronger overall entry than the Olympic Games with bigger draws in all events.
The TOTAL BWF World Championships is an individual tournament comprising five events - men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Nations from all over the world are invited to enter their players through the world ranking qualification system.
Showcasing only the top ranked singles and doubles players in the world, the TOTAL BWF World Championships will welcome multiple Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth champions to Glasgow and the knock-out tournament format will require players to deliver world-class performances from the very first match.
For each event, the joint third place players are awarded bronze medals, the runner-up silver and the winner is awarded a gold medal and the title of World Champion.
History was made on finals day at the TOTAL BWF World Championships as Viktor Axelsen became the first European player to win men’s singles gold in 20 years.
